— A pickup crash on Interstate 10 has claimed the lives of a woman and child and injured another woman and three children. Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said emergency personnel learned of the crash after a caller at 10:06 p.m. Thursday reported seeing a child on I-10 at the 40 mile-marker at the foot of the Biloxi River Bridge. Two of the children were asleep in the bed of the pickup when the truck struck a guard rail, went over the rail and struck a pine tree, Hargrove said. He identified the deceased as Margaritte Berdinez, 58, and Osvaldo Caro, 11. Injured were the driver, Marissa Berdinez, and Jailynn Hernandez, 11; Dahialnn Rodriguez, 1; and Juan Gonzalez, 5. Hargrove described the crash as "horrific." He said the two women trapped in the extended cab vehicle. He said Biloxi and Gulfport firefighters removed the driver, whose mother died before she could be extricated. They had left Deleon Springs, Fla., at 11 a.m. Thursday and were travelling to Mexico to visit friends, Hargrove said. The survivors were taken to Memorial Hospital at Gulfport and the 5-year-old was then transported to a trauma center in Mobile.
