A steady rain and no forecast for a break forced organizers to cancel Sunday's 2010 Smokin' The Lake at The Dock Bar and Grill.

The cancellation came a day after the Deep South Racing Association sanctioned event saw five of the seven races take off after a four-hour delay when high winds and heavy rainfall hampered the course on Gulfport Lake.

Day Two plans called for the completion of races six and seven at 9 a.m. before a full slate of the double-elimination faces were to take place.

But race officials and promoters canceled the races at 9:15 a.m.

"We did it from a safety standpoint,’’ promoter Woody Bailey said. ‘’With the weather we had Saturday and again on Sunday, we had debris in the (Gulfport) lake from the rain.

‘’We felt it would not have been safe so we decided it was best not race.’’

Since the race was sanctioned by the DSR, there’s a chance the event could be rescheduled in June at The Dock to allow racers to collect valuable points to determine season-ending champions in each of the seven classes.
