GULFPORT — Gulfport police today said a burglary suspect who was shot by an officer Sunday night will be jailed on his release from a hospital.

Police Sgt. Chris Ryle said Chad Eric Barber, 27, was found inside Central Elementary after an alarm sounded at 10:48 p.m. Ryle said one shot was fired, striking Barber, while an officer was attempting to take him into custody.

Ryle said the officer has been placed on administrative duties in a non-enforcement position pending investigation.

Ryle said the District Attorney’s Office went to the scene and called the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation for an independent probe.
