PASS CHRISTIAN — A man in a wheelchair was taken to a hospital Wednesday evening after he was struck by a car on Second Street.

Police Sgt. Barry Smith said the man had left Wal-Mart with his service dog and was a couple of blocks away when he tried to cross the street in an unlit area. The driver of the car was in traffic diverted from Long Beach due to a brief road closure to clean up a spill on Beatline Road, Smith said.

The car struck the back of the wheelchair around 5:50 p.m.

The man’s service dog at first was hesitant to let emergency responders check on him, Smith said. The man was alert and conscious as he was taken to Memorial Hospital at Gulfport. His injuries didn’t appear to be life-theatening.

His condition and the names of those involved were not available.
