Man accused of shoplifting

GULFPORT — Police arrested Britten Smith, 23, of Long Beach on Thursday and charged him with felony shoplifting, third offense.

Police were called to Froogle’s Supermarket at 25 Hardy Court by employees who accused Smith of concealing items from the store and leaving without paying for them. Smith attempted to flee on foot, police said, but was taken into custody.

When booked, police learned that Smith had two previous shoplifting convictions within seven years, elevating Thursday’s arrest to a felony charge.

Smith was taken to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center, where his bond was set at $5,000.

Wrong utility bills mailed to customers in October

D’IBERVILLE — Because of a computer error, incorrect bills were sent to D’Iberville water and sewer customers in October.

The computer system sent bills based on customer information from October 2008, so new customers may not receive a bill and those who closed their accounts may have been billed.

Residents and business owners with questions should stop at City Hall or call 392-7966.

‘Bazaar’ fundraiser helps teacher with cancer

OCEAN SPRINGS — “Our ‘Bazaar’ Way to Fight for Cournety’s Cure!” is the name of a Saturday fundraising for a school teacher battling cancer and facing bills.

The event organized by friends will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Ocean Springs Middle School’s activity field.

A rock climbing wall, train rides, hay rides, cakewalk, dunking book, moon bounce, clowns, costume contests and lots of food are on tap.

Courtney Hubbard, mother of three and second-grade teacher at Pecan Park Elementary, is undergoing long-term treatment for breast cancer.

“The festival will help offset the many medical bills that she will face,” said Terra Dickey, one of the organizers.
