HOOVER, Ala. -- At long last, the mystery has been solved.
It was former Florida coach Steve Spurrier, in his fifth season at South Carolina, who failed to vote for Florida quarterback Tim Tebow as the preseason All-SEC quarterback. With a caveat.
Spurrier said an assistant filled out his ballot and approved it, without paying close enough attention.
He learned that Tebow got 10 of the 11 possible votes for All-SEC quarterback on Thursday, and asked his assistant if he in fact had voted for Tebow, a two-time Heisman Trophy finalist and the winner of the award in 2007.
"(The USC assistant) actually said we had (Ole Miss QB) Jevan Snead (on the ballot)," Spurrier said this morning. "It's my fault. I apologized to Tim Tebow. I'm embarrassed about it. I feel bad about it. We made a mistake; I made a mistake.
"(Tebow) is not just the best quarterback in this league, but he's the best quarterback in the country. The best player in the country."
Spurrier said he asked SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom if he could "officially change his vote," and Bloom said he would accommodate him.
Spurrier later said, "Snead's a very good quarterback, too, but Tim Tebow should have been in there."
