The NOAA Fisheries Service will close recreational red snapper fishing in federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico in August, the organization announced today.

The closure will take effect Aug. 15 and recreational fishing will reopen on June 1, 2010 at the beginning of the federal recreational fishing season.

Anglers are reminded that those who are aboard a vessel with a federal charter or headboat permit also must abide by the closure in state waters.

Closure of the recreational red snapper fishery in federal waters complies with regulations implemented under the Fishery Management Plan for Reef Fish Resources of the Gulf of Mexico.
