WASHINGTON, D.C. -- FEMA has extended until June 1, 2009, the deadline for operation of the Disaster Housing Assistance Program, Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS) announced today according to a press release from his office.
The program helps families and individuals living in Hurricane Katrina housing find permanent housing and employment. The extension of the deadline will enable the 17 non-profit organizations operating under the program to come closer to the goal of assisting approximately 2,500 households still in FEMA housing. “FEMA has made the right decision in extending this deadline,” Sen. Cochran said. “Too many Mississippians who lost their homes in Hurricane Katrina remain in temporary disaster housing. With this extension the Disaster Housing Assistance Program will be able to ensure that as many Mississippians as possible are provided with the support they need to move into permanent homes.” Since the program began in August of 2008, approximately 3,500 households have been assisted. There are currently 2,500 Mississippi households remaining in disaster housing. The Disaster Housing Assistance Program is administered by The Department of Housing and Urban Development and funded by a FEMA grant.
