Football coach Sylvester Croom is out at Mississippi State, according to radio and television reports.

Reports say the fifth-year coach resigned after Friday's 45-0 loss to Ole Miss in Oxford.

Croom steadfastly refused to comment on his status, saying only that "We'll take a look at that when we get back."

Mississippi State appears to have a successor in mind. Tommy Bowden, who resigned from Clemson mid-season, also coached at Tulane. Bowden left Clemson in October.

Croom's record is 21-38 in five season, 10-30 in the SEC. MSU had just one winning season, 8-5, 4-4 in 2007 and earned a trip to the Liberty Bowl. His resignation leaves just two African-American head coaches in Division I football.

This year, the Dogs finished 4-8, 2-6 in the SEC.

Calls to Athletic Director Greg Byrne have not been returned.
