GULFPORT --

Wednesday's severe weather was way over the threshold for the free ferry over the Bay of St. Louis to operate.

"The weather was just too severe," General Manager Dietrich Giles said. "When there's tornado warnings out and severe weather forecasted, it's just not worth going out there."

He said it was so bad they only had to turn around two cars of folks who hoped the ferry would be running.

Hornblower Marine Services, which is operating the ferry, has started a toll-free number so passengers can check on the ferry's operations. There's also a new Web site, baystlouisferry.com, that has more information about the ferry.

It includes a schedule, which has now been published to include one-hour round-trip times. The ferry runs from 6:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m., departing Bay St. Louis on the bottom of the hour and Henderson Point at the top of the hour.

Giles said the boat's business has been brisk.

"Man, it's been great," he said. "We have been hauling some folks."
