PASCAGOULA -- A Pascagoula teen who was shot in an apparent accidental shooting Monday night on Miller Street has died of his injuries, Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus confirmed this morning.

Jarmacus Leshaw Peairs, 16, was shot about 6:15 p.m. Monday and family members rushed him to Singing River Hospital. Broadus said Peairs died of the wound today.

Pascagoula Police Capt. Shannon Broom said it appears that the victim’s cousin, Michael L'Ernest Peairs, was attempting to unload a semi-automatic pistol at the home when it malfunctioned and fired, hitting the teen in his side.

“It appears right now that it’s going to be an unintentional shooting,” Broom said.
