Jackson County began an internal investigation today into an alleged misappropriation of County funds.

The entire amount is still to be determined.

This investigation has lead to the suspension of a County employee, whose name is not being released at this time. The investigation was initially handled by the Sheriff’s Department and then turned over to state authorities.

“We are pursuing this matter fully,” said Supervisors President Manly Barton. “We have several financial checks and balances in place, nonetheless this situation did occur. We are going to take all the appropriate steps to keep this from happening again. As public servants, our first responsibility is to be good stewards of the taxpayer’s money."

Criminal charges have not been filed at this time.

The Sun Herald will update this story in Saturday's paper.
