FLY A KITE, OR
HEAD TO THE RODEO
Among the interesting local entertainment options this week, and there are more than a few, we have the 9th annual Mississippi Gulf Coast Kite Fest and the 7th annual Jackson County Sheriff's Rodeo. The Kite Fest, sponsored by the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce and named a Top 20 Event in the Southeast USA by the Southeast Tourism Society, is scheduled for 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Long Beach Harbor. The 7th annual Jackson County Sheriff's Rodeo, meanwhile, a benefit for the Jackson County sheriff's reserves and mounted patrol division, takes place 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday at the Mallette Multi-Purpose Arena (formerly the Vancleave Multi-Purpose Arena). Highlights include calf roping, steer wrestling, team roping, breakaway roping and barrel racing for girls, bareback bronco riding, saddle bronco riding, bull riding, trick riding and more.
'IRON MAN'
Is it just me, or, with the notable exception of "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," are we in the midst of the pre-summer movie doldrums? Therefore it's with no small amount of glee that we welcome the arrival of "Iron Man," described by the Associated Press as "a blockbuster with a brain." Starring the already seemingly-indestructible Robert Downey Jr., "
'Iron Man' is a blast...the perfect start to the summer with its shiny mix of visual effects, elaborate set pieces and plenty of humor within its intelligent script," reports AP Movie Critic Christy Lemire. (See review page 9.)
